With his twin sister Guadeloupe , Martinique is one of the top destinations in the Caribbean. It combines rightly the sun, relaxing on sandy beaches away from the winter blues of the metropolis. It would be a shame to settle for this one horizon as the island is full of other treasures . Because unlike other Caribbean islands whose only interest is limited to the seaside , Martinique is ideal for family tourism , and for vagabond and eager-to-discover travellers. With the fauna and flora in the background , parents and children can afford beautiful creole adventures and refuel sunny memories .
Martinique : behind the beach, wildlife
In the extreme south of the island, the Grande Anse des Salines is the most famous beach of Martinique . Tails , the atmosphere "postcard" 1.2 km from sandy crescent moon and surrounded by coconut trees , savored lying on a towel or , for lovers of the seabed, with a mask diving.Face side , less well known and popular , beautiful mangrove awaits the curious followers who take the trouble to cross the road along the beach. Pond Saline , protected natural treasure of nearly 100 ha , home to an incredible wildlife : several dozen types of crabs ( the Cirique , the blue earth, mantou or the " se my fault ") and migratory birds ( egrets and waders ) . No need to go on an adventure to close. The Conservatoire du Littoral had the excellent idea of building a wooden bridge that leads to an observatory placed in the middle of the water. From here you can admire while discretion and without discomfort to the animals , the dance of birds that come to feed . On the way back , the kids have fun to spot crabs sometimes leave their claws holes they dig in the mud.
Martinique : jungle and volcano
If the southern part of Martinique is the beach tourism , the northern fits perfectly to long walks in nature. Swept by frequent rainfall, lush jungle offers a rugged geography around the famous volcano Mount Pelée . The more experienced athletes and there randonneront with pleasure. With children , the garden of Balata , about ten kilometers north of Fort -de- France , can be lost without any risk or effort to impressive palm trees and flowering plants hued medium ( € 12.80 per adult, € 7.20 for children 3 to 12 years , www.jardindebalata.fr ) . In recent months, an amazing walk sensations invites visitors to wander suspended more than ten meters above the ground and hung giants mahoganys bridge. The kids love it!
At the foot of the volcano , the city of Saint-Pierre is a historic staple of Martinique . Completely destroyed by the eruption of Mount Pelee in 1902, a disaster that killed 26,000 people, the city still has some ruins of houses and buildings with blackened lava walls. The drama spared one person: a prisoner who managed to survive thanks to the thick stone walls of his cell.
Finally, again for historical key , a stop on the beach Carbet is needed to address with the younger the issue of colonization. A small sign points out that this is where Christopher Columbus landed in 1502 on his fourth trip to the Caribbean .
